Nel 1970, con il sacrificio e l'impegno di pochi italiani (eravamo in un periodo di vero pionierismo), si comincia a muovere anche a casa nostra un interesse più vasto nei confronti del bonsai.
In questi anni nascono le prime due associazioni nazionali (Bonsai Club d'Italia, Associazione Italiana Bonsai) che avrebbero riunito diversi club di tutta la penisola. Il livello qualitativo del bonsaismo italiano comincia a crescere grazie anche al contributo di maestri giapponesi spesso invitati a tenere seminari e dimostrazioni.
Dopo anni di duro lavoro e proselitismo portato avanti dalle tre associazioni italiane (la terza associazione è l'ABAN), si arriva nel 1995 to merge into a single foundation, the UBI (Union of Italian Bonsai) in recent years has contributed significantly to the growth of the image of Italian bonsai around the world.
